Luverne Hjelm Obituary (1929 - 2010) - Sand Springs, Oklahoma

Luverne Annette Hjelm of Tulsa passed away Sunday, August 22, 2010 after a short illness. Luverne was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Axel E. and Ellen (Freeberg) Hagquist. She was a graduate from Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a Registered Nurse.She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Tulsa and was involved in Sunday school for more than thirty years. Luverne was active in the work of the Lord all her adult life including leadership in Bible Study Fellowship and Auxiliary President of Gideons International. She was also a Young Life Director and a Deaconess at Fridley Covenant Church in Minnesota. She was a pianist for Go Ye Group at First Covenant Church and an organist as a teenager in St. Cloud, MN. Luverne loved music and continued her piano playing up until her illness a few short weeks ago.Luverne was an avid sports fan. She was a track star in high school and loved competition. Once her grandchildren started competing in athletics she became their number one fan and only missed a few games over the years. She had 13 grandchildren ? all of whom knew they were special to her. She had so much love to pass around. Luverne is survived by her husband of 52 years Cliff Hjelm, of the home, five children, twins Terese Kubat (Jim) of Bloomington, Illinois, Thomas Hjelm (Kathy) of Flower Mound, Texas, Kristine Rouse (Steve) of Tulsa, Steve Hjelm (Shaunna) of Tulsa, and Scott Hjelm (Nanette) of Tulsa, thirteen grandchildren; Sara Kubat, Erik and Julie Hjelm, Stephen, Thomas, Scott, James and Frederic Rouse, Steven Hjelm, Lauren, Scott Douglas, Samuel and Seth Hjelm. She was preceded in death by her parents Axel and Ellen Hagquist and six half brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. August 25, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Tulsa, with Reverend Deron Spoo and Reverend Larry Merideth officiating. Burial will be at Woodland Memorial Park in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Dillon Funeral Home of Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
